Makeover day a big success

Taff Allotment Action Day 2012

Taff Allotment Action Day 2012

Tenants, staff at Taff Housing and contractors and partners all stepped up to the mark for a massive makeover day down at the allotments, in glorious sunshine.
It began with a mammoth effort from all concerned to get the site ready for the day, with preparation of the raised bed area, laying a base for the new meeting and training shed and digging the pond.
Taff maintenance contractors GKR had put in many hours building the site fence, gates and supplying materials for the paths.
On the action day, GKR were joined by house building contractors Leadbitters, mi-space and Cosgrove, who contributed the raised beds, fruit cage and pond materials.
The site was buzzing with activity, as the shed was built, fruit cage assembled, pond filled and beds planted up.
Leadbitters team got stuck into planting up the beds, while mi-space assembled the fruit cage and Cosgrove’s team worked on the pond. Before long, the allotments had been lifted up to another level. See photos from the action day – click on the link: http://www.taffhousing.co.uk/node/735
Taff tenants on the Practical Gardening course demonstrated their new-found skills by planting up two areas on the site, while others talked to guests about the huge changes on the site.
As part of the build-up, a big thank you is due to the Probation Payback team for the dozens of hours spent working on the pathways and raised bed paths, as tonnes of chippings and stone dust had to be brought on to the site.
Members of the Leckwith and Droves Allotment Committee also pitched in to help and a big thanks is due to Sam and Ivor for their help.
A special thanks to Growing Green for helping get the water supply sorted, too, which is vital for a healthy allotment project. A spokesperson for housing consortia Integrate, who helped bring the contractors together for the day’s action, said: “This shows the ability of partnership working to support community projects.”
Taff Allotment Group chairman Fanwell Tandi said he was delighted with the new facilities.
“On behalf of Taff Tenant Allotment Executive Committee,I would like to convey my sincere gratitude for the magnificent work all the contractors and Probation Service have done for our Allotment.
“What was twelve months ago a derelict piece of land, has been turned into a magnificent garden and recreation centre for the tenants
“The allotment has been given a new facelift. Fencing, gates and disabled pathways and more have been beautifully constructed.”
